Coker College: Personnel Feature

Many students each year choose to attend Coker College, a private liberal arts college located in the heart of downtown Hartsville, South Carolina. Amongst those bright students, Aamon Oree tells his story.

Originally from Charleston, South Carolina, Aamon first hears about Coker through the mail his junior year of high school. He decided to take a step toward his future by touring the college one year later during the end of his senior year. The level of beauty the campus held captivated him. Thus, he applied and was accepted almost immediately given his academic achievements and motivation in the classroom.

Presently, Aamon is an aspiring broadcast journalist majoring in communication, hopeful to work at a news station after graduation. He is an active member of the community as he is involved in the Coker College Culture Club (CCCC) and the Resident Hall Association.

Among his experiences in Hartsville, Aamon describes his favorite as the campus wide snowball fight during the winter of his freshman year.

"The entire campus came out onto Davidson Lawn and we all just connected," Aamon recollects. "It was fun and that's when I realized I had made the right choice."

He also described the location of the college as "a good distance from most of the big cities in South Carolina which makes it easy for a quick vacation with my friends whenever we have time to do stuff." Aamon adds, "Not to mention that almost everything is within walking distance in Hartsville so that really helps with saving money on gas!"

Although Aamon does have high hopes for what he wishes future Cobras to experience later on down the road. "I was hoping that there would be more food selections. Don't get me wrong, the cafeteria and all of its employees are wonderful, but more variety would be nice," Oree describes. "Greek life is also an aspect I was hoping for. Although our school is private, it's still large enough for fraternities and sororities to begin. I believe this aspect would bring more attention to Coker and make it more popular and well known on the map."

Coker College is a private school that focuses its classrooms around roundtable discussions. "With Coker being the size that it is, you don't feel like just a number in the classroom but rather an important individual," Aamon states as he describes his experience out of Coker. "It's the connections and bonds you make with your professors that make this place feel like home."
